Gridvolution is a 12,000 square foot adaptive reuse of an existing multi-housing residence in Berkeley, California into an art school combined with residential spaces. The structure consists of student housing, gallery spaces, studios, classrooms, and a cafe. This project aims to use a trapezoidal grid to unify the new adaptation of the site through a common circulation direction and form.

Gridvolution is separated into two forms: the pre-existing residential structure and the additional art school. The educational portion of the project is vertically raised on the first floor to create a formal distinction from the ground-level private housing counterpart. To continue the language of elevated art school circulation, the second floor has raised platforms for public pin-up display.

Gridvolution's glazing strategy of narrow windows and skylights are used to strengthen its grid form from the envelope to interior space.

Early additional form and evolution of its adaptation to the existing multi-housing residence.
