U Annex features a 4,000 square foot attached addition to the courtyard of Bauer Wurster Hall. For the program, the building is a combination of a lobby on the first floor with an open air ceiling that intersects into an auditorium above. The goal of this project is to create a spatial journey that smoothly transitions between two rooms stacked onto each other through the formalistic qualities of a "U".
U Annex formalistically mirrors the surrounding site of Bauer Wurster Hall’s West side through its "U" form. This is visible in plan for both exterior and interior walls.
U Annex has three entrances into the building each with its own unique experience. On the left is an entrance that has a ramp that guides the occupants around the structure and eventually leads into the auditorium. The central entrance, on the other hand, mirrors the site with a small open-air courtyard of its own. In contrast, the right side has a staircase that leads directly into the auditorium room. These two forms of circulation are accompanied by their own custom skylight.

The ramp has a long-angled skylight that casts rays of light on the surrounding wall to accompany the lengthy journey ahead.

The staircase has a skylight at the same proportion of the stair’s landing and angled with the stair’s slope. This was done to lead occupants up the stairs with a familiar lighting.
In section, U Annex utilizes a shared curved ceiling for both the lobby and auditorium. Through creating a double heighted space, this allows for the two rooms to feel interconnected with one another.
